The lens is focussed on the owl in the Audubon print behind.  Being closer to the camera, Forster is slightly out of focus.  This may have been the accident of a fixed focal length box camera, or perhaps it was the intentional focal effect of a more sophisticated photographer.  In either case the result is a beautiful and symbolically adept soft focus image and a flattering portrait.
